The process starts with an initial sketch of the design for approval. This is usually to scale to make sure that the image sits comfortably in the space available.
As each layer is completed the tiles are fired to 760°C, this takes about fourteen hours and bonds the paints to the glaze creating a completely permanent image.
Once the design has been approved I start painting, building the image up over three or four layers with a firing in between each layer. This allows subtle tones and detail to be added.
I have been hand painting tiles for many years now. All the designs are original and are unique paintings created to a specific brief for each client.

I originally studied illustration and have an honours degree in Graphic Design. I started painting onto tiles after a spell working for Fired Earth. I realised there was a gap in the market for people who could find a suitable tile for their kitchen or bathroom but not an image that they liked and so started painting tiles to order.

The painting process will take several days depending on the size and complexity of the design but the end result is a unique piece of artwork.
All the hand painted tiles are original, designed to a specific
brief for each client.

I use an onglaze method of painting using special ceramic
paints applied onto tiles that have already been glazed.
This means the choice of background tile is pretty much
unlimited, as is the subject matter.
